Uniview has overhauled its recorder operating system with a modern Graphical User Interface (GUI). This redesigned interface brings simplicity to navigation across display outputs and web browser management sessions.

Key GUI Changes

If you have experience managing older Uniview firmware versions, the main changes lie in the consolidation of analytics and trigger configurations. The legacy "Smart" tab has been renamed to the "Events" tab. This holds all motion detection, Ultra Motion Detection (UMD), line crossing, and intrusion analytics rules.

Both the Local NVR Monitor Interface (connected directly to the recorder) and the Web Interface (accessed remotely over your local area network) now share an almost identical visual layout. This design choice ensures that configuring rules on a remote laptop presents the exact same menu paths and button placements as sitting in front of the physical NVR monitor.

Choosing Your Configuration Method

Method 1: Local Network Web Interface (Recommended for Remote Access)

Accessing the system via a computer connected to the same network router as the NVR. This method is ideal when the NVR is installed in a secure, hard-to-reach location such as a server rack, basement, or attic utility room.

Method 2: Direct Local Connection (Standalone Hardware Setup)
Connecting a mouse directly into the NVR's USB port and a monitor into the HDMI or VGA output port. This provides direct connection without requiring an active PC on site.

When launching the NVR web interface for the first time on your computer, specific web browser and authentication protocols must be established to ensure video streams display smoothly.

Web Interface Connection & Plugin Installation

  1. Locating the NVR IP Address: Open EZStation or EZTools. On the Device Management screen, locate your NVR. You can click the blue "e" icon to launch the default web page automatically, or click the pencil edit icon, copy the listed IP address, and paste it manually into the address bar of Microsoft Edge.

  3. Installing the Web Video Plugin: Upon reaching the login screen, Microsoft Edge will display a prompt requesting plugin installation. Download and execute the official plugin file, then restart the browser window.

  5. Granting Security Permissions: When prompted by browser pop-up banners asking to enable extension permissions or active media playback, select Allow or Enable. Failure to grant these permissions will block live video feeds from rendering on screen.

First-Time Credential Initialization & Password Binding

For first-time boot-ups, the system ships with standard factory parameters. However, the initial wizard strictly enforces custom security configurations before permitting operational access:

  • Default Credentials: The default factory username is admin (all lowercase), and the default factory password is 123456.
  • Custom Password Requirement: The GUI will block progress until you create a new administrative password. The password must contain a minimum of 9 characters and consist of a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numerical digits, and at least one special character.
  • Binding Emergency Recovery Email: In the password creation prompt, you must bind an active, reachable email address to the admin profile. If you forget your password in the future, this bound email serves as the official mechanism for receiving dynamic reset verification keys.

Security Precaution:

Never leave your NVR set to default administrative passwords. Always bind a monitored email account during initialization to prevent physical lockout scenarios that would otherwise require hardware chip resets.

Accurate temporal indexing is essential for security recorders. If an NVR's system clock drifts off true time, retrieving specific incident clips becomes difficult, and recorded video may be deemed legally inadmissible as evidence during law enforcement or judicial proceedings.

Step-by-Step System Clock Synchronization

  1. Navigate to the top menu bar and select Settings.
  2. From the left-hand navigation pane, select System, then General, and click on the Time tab.
  3. Time Zone Selection: Select your regional time zone from the drop-down menu (e.g., Eastern Time, Pacific Time).
  4. Initial Computer Sync: Click the Sync with Computer button to instantly align the NVR's internal clock with your local PC's clock.
  5. Automated NTP Server Synchronization: Toggle the NTP (Network Time Protocol) switch to Enable. Set the NTP Server Address to a public time server such as pool.ntp.org. This maintains continuous, millisecond-accurate sync across your network, eliminating hardware clock drift over time.

Configuring Automatic Daylight Saving Time (DST)

To avoid manual clock adjustments twice a year, configure automated DST transition rules within the same menu:

  • Toggle the DST switch to Enable.
  • Set the start rule to: 2nd Sunday in March at 02:00:00 AM.
  • Set the end rule to: 1st Sunday in November at 02:00:00 AM.
  • Click Apply to store these rules into memory. The NVR clock will now automatically shift forward and backward without human intervention.

Surveillance Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) operate under intense 24/7 write stress. Implementing preventive maintenance routines at the hardware and operating system levels prolongs disk lifespan, prevents memory corruption, and maintains system responsiveness.

Hard Drive Initialization & Formatting

When installing new surveillance-grade drives (such as Western Digital Purple or Seagate SkyHawk), or reusing drives from prior deployments, perform a full file-system format to clear damaged sectors and write fresh allocation tables.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Storage > Disk.
  2. Select the target hard drive from the listed physical disk drives.
  3. Click Format. The system will purge existing data partitions and construct a surveillance-optimized file system structure.
  4. Verify that the disk status turns to a healthy green Normal indicator upon completion.

Automated Weekly Maintenance Reboots

Running embedded surveillance Linux operating systems indefinitely without maintenance can result in short-term RAM cache clutter. This memory fragmentation can lead to subtle GUI responsiveness drops or slight delays in mobile push notifications.

Best Practice Maintenance Schedule:

Navigate to Settings > System > Maintenance. Program an automated reboot schedule for once per week during an off-peak operational window (e.g., Tuesdays at 03:00 AM). Clearing system memory caches keeps push notification pathways running smoothly without missing background recording triggers.

Adding IP cameras depends on whether the cameras are plugged directly into physical PoE ports on the rear of the NVR, or connected to an external PoE network switch located across your local area network (LAN).

Managing Default Camera Passwords

Before adopting cameras, configure the NVR's default camera authentication password so it can attempt auto-logins seamlessly:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Camera.
  2. Click the More button at the top of the interface.
  3. Enter your default camera password. If your cameras are factory-new, this password is 123456. If you previously initialized your cameras with a custom administrative password, type that custom password into this box.
  4. If multiple cameras still use the factory 123456 password, utilize the Batch Modify Password function in this menu to update all connected cameras to your custom master password at once.
  5. Click Refresh in the upper right corner to force the NVR to re-authenticate feeds. Direct Plug-and-Play PoE cameras will transition to an Online status.

Adding Network-Connected IP Cameras (Resolving Subnet Mismatches)

In the new GUI, all discoverable IP devices on your local network automatically populate in the bottom list of the Camera menu, replacing the legacy manual "Auto Search" pop-up window.

If a network camera displays an offline status reading "Network Disconnected", the camera resides on a different network subnet ("different street address") than the NVR's internal network interface.

The IP Address Analogy:

Think of an IP address like a physical street address. The first three number sets represent the Street Name (e.g., 172.16.0), while the final number represents the specific House Number (e.g., 12). Devices cannot communicate directly unless they reside on the exact same street.

Correcting Camera Subnets Without Changing PC Adapter Settings:

  1. Observe your NVR's subnet format (e.g., 172.16.0.X).
  2. Locate the target camera in the lower discoverable device list (e.g., currently sitting at 192.168.1.50).
  3. Click the Gear (Edit) icon next to the camera in the bottom list.

  5. Change the camera's IP address so that its first three octets match the NVR's subnet (e.g., change to 172.16.0.55), ensuring the final house number is unique on the network.
  6. Click inside the Subnet Mask and Gateway fields to auto-fill matching values, enter the camera password, and click Save.
  7. Once the camera shifts to the matching subnet, select the target NVR channel position, click Modify, change the Add Mode to IP Address, paste the updated IP, enter the camera password, and click OK.

Troubleshooting "Incorrect Username or Password":

If the camera status displays an error reading "Incorrect username or password", click Modify on that channel, re-enter the camera's current password, and click Save to re-establish the encrypted video handshake.

Modifying IP Camera Subnet in Uniview GUI The lower discovery window displays network cameras and allows instant IP subnet modifications via the gear icon.

When adding non-Uniview (third-party) cameras to a Uniview NVR, the system communicates using universal ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) protocols. Understanding ONVIF profiles determines which advanced features transfer over network streams.

ONVIF Profile Breakdown

  • ONVIF Profile S (Basic Video & PTZ): The standard legacy profile. Transmits primary H.264 standard-definition/high-definition video streams, basic audio feeds, and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) control commands between third-party hardware.
  • ONVIF Profile G (Edge Storage Recovery): Dedicated to onboard storage management. Enables the NVR to query, retrieve, and sync recorded video files stored locally on a third-party camera's internal micro-SD card after a network outage.
  • ONVIF Profile T (Advanced Video & Compression): Designed for modern high-resolution streams. Supports 4K video transport, high-efficiency H.265 compression bandwidth savings, bidirectional audio, and native hardware motion detection triggers.
  • ONVIF Profile M (Smart AI Analytics Metadata): The newest interoperability standard. Allows third-party AI cameras to pass structured smart metadata (such as human and vehicle object classifications) directly into the Uniview NVR's analytics database.

Integration Rule:

If a third-party camera and the Uniview NVR only share Profile S compatibility, advanced features like H.265 smart encoding or target classification will not operate. Always verify profile compliance across both hardware devices.

Uniview's mobile application, UniEase (and EZCloud portal), enables remote live viewing, notification alerts, and system management over mobile networks without requiring complex router port-forwarding.

Creating Your UniEase User Account

  1. Download and install UniEase from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Launch the app and tap Sign Up.
  3. Enter your email address (or mobile phone number) and tap Send Code.
  4. Complete the interactive visual verification puzzle on screen.

Note: This single account login works across both the UniEase mobile smartphone app and the EZCloud desktop portal, removing the need for separate accounts.

Pairing the NVR via QR Code

  1. On the main screen of the UniEase app, tap the "+" (Add) icon in the upper right corner to activate your phone's camera scanner.
  2. UniEase App Add Device Button Tap the plus icon in the top right corner to begin pairing a new NVR.
  3. Point your camera at the QR code sticker located on the physical NVR chassis, OR navigate on your NVR web interface to Settings > Network > EZCloud and scan the dynamic QR code directly off your monitor screen.
  4. The application will ingest the serial number and complete binding within 15 seconds.

Important QR Code Security Lockout:

For security, an NVR's hardware QR code can only be scanned and registered by one master account. If an installation technician scans the QR code first under their account, they must use the app's internal Sharing menu to delegate access to your personal user account.

Audio streams offer vital evidentiary context, but camera micro-phones are usually turned off by default out of the box to prevent unintentional privacy compliance issues.

Legal Notice on Audio Recording Compliance:

Audio monitoring laws vary by jurisdiction. Many regions enforce strict two-party consent mandates regarding voice recording in public spaces, commercial storefronts, or employee work environments. Posted signage may not fulfill legal requirements in all jurisdictions. Always verify local statutes prior to enabling microphone recording options.

Step 1: Enabling Camera Microphone Streams

  1. Navigate to Settings > Camera > Camera Parameters > Audio.
  2. Select the channel corresponding to your audio-capable camera.
  3. Toggle the Audio switch to Enable.
  4. Click Copy to apply this setting across additional channels equipped with microphones.

Step 2: Activating Disk Audio Storage Encoding

Enabling the microphone on live streams does not automatically write audio data to the hard drive. You must explicitly tell the recorder to bind audio packets into saved video files:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Storage > Audio Storage.
  2. Toggle the primary Audio Storage switch to ON.
  3. Click Save.

Warning: Audio storage encoding is not retroactive. Footage archived prior to enabling this switch will remain silent and cannot have audio restored.

To maximize hard drive retention days without purchasing extra storage, configure your NVR to log full-resolution video only when motion or smart analytics events are triggered. This approach is useful for indoor spaces or low-traffic perimeter zones during off-peak hours.

Configuring the Recording Grid

  1. Navigate to Settings > Storage > Schedule.
  2. Select the target camera channel from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click the Gear (Edit) icon next to the Weekly Recording Schedule grid.
  4. Schedule Editor Gear Icon Click the gear icon next to the calendar grid to unlock the scheduling tools.
  5. Review the color-coded legend:
    • Blue Blocks: Continuous 24/7 uninterrupted recording.
    • Red Blocks: Event / Motion triggered recording only.
  6. Select the Event tool and drag your mouse across the calendar grid to convert target time slots (e.g., night hours) into red blocks. You can mix continuous recording during business hours with event recording at night.

Establishing Safety Net Buffers (Pre-Alarm & Post-Alarm)

To ensure motion events capture the actions leading up to a trigger, set up pre-event caching memory:

  • Pre-Alarm Recording: Instructs the NVR to maintain a continuous, rolling buffer in RAM (e.g., 10 seconds). When a person crosses a boundary, the NVR prepends those cached 10 seconds onto the saved file, capturing the approach before the line was touched.
  • Post-Alarm Recording: Dictates how long the system continues writing footage after movement ceases (typically set between 10 to 60 seconds).

Critical Step: Mandatory Trigger Action Links

Setting up red grid schedules tells the NVR when to expect events, but you must also give the system permission to record on trigger. Navigate to the Events menu > Motion Detection > Trigger Action tab. Ensure the checkbox for the corresponding channel is selected under the Recording column. If this box is unchecked, the NVR will detect motion on screen, but will fail to save files to the disk!

Default optical presets rarely deliver ideal performance in challenging environments. Adjusting specialized image processing controls balances harsh glare, low-light noise, and optical orientation.

Balancing Harsh Lighting with WDR (Wide Dynamic Range)

When a camera faces glass entryways with bright outdoor sunlight competing against dark indoor shadows, subject faces often appear dark and underexposed.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Camera > Camera Parameters > Exposure.
  2. Locate the WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) toggle.
  3. Set WDR to ON or Auto. The camera will merge multiple exposure speeds per frame, brightening deep shadows while suppressing blown-out highlights to maintain balanced detail.

Matching Scene Presets & Corridor Mode

  • Scene Presets: Change the exposure scene drop-down menu to match your environment: Indoor (suppresses artificial bulb glare), General (standard outdoor areas), or Starlight (maximizes gain in low-light environments).
  • Corridor Mode (Vertical Aspect Rotation): Standard 16:9 widescreen formats waste video pixels on side walls when installed down long, narrow hallways. Turning on Corridor Mode rotates the video stream 90 degrees into a vertical 9:16 aspect ratio, maximizing usable hallway field of view.

Fixing Light Flickering

If indoor lighting creates rolling black bars or rapid flickering across your screen, the camera's shutter speed frequency is out of sync with your building's electrical grid frequency. Under Exposure Settings, change the frequency drop-down from Auto to match your electrical grid standard (e.g., 60Hz in North America, 50Hz in Europe).

Standard pixel-change motion detection triggers alerts for irrelevant movements such as heavy rain, falling snow, moving tree shadows, or flying insects. Uniview's Ultra Motion Detection (UMD) applies AI target classification to eliminate false alerts.

Activating UMD Target Classification

  1. Navigate to the top menu bar and select the Events tab.
  2. Select Motion from the left menu and choose your target camera channel.
  3. Check the box to enable Ultra Motion Detection (UMD).
  4. Select target classification filters: check Human and/or Vehicle. The camera will now ignore non-human and non-vehicle pixel shifts.
  5. Use your mouse to clear the default full-screen grid and draw focused detection zones over critical access points (e.g., driveways, entry doors).
  6. Sensitivity Adjustment: Set sensitivity lower (e.g., 30–40) for confined indoor spaces to avoid false triggers, and higher (e.g., 70–80) for long-range outdoor perimeters.

Configuring Smart Tripwire Analytics (Cross Line & Intrusion)

For higher perimeter precision, navigate to Events > Smart Event:

  • Cross Line Detection: Draw a digital tripwire line across a fence line or entryway. Select the directional trigger arrow: A->B, B->A, or Both Ways to log events only when someone enters a restricted area.
  • Intrusion Detection: Draw a multi-point polygon zone over sensitive regions and establish minimum time duration rules before an alert sounds.
Setting up UMD Human and Vehicle Filters UMD filters out environmental noise like rain or shadows, focusing alerts specifically on human and vehicle targets.

Protecting security systems long-term requires maintaining system software updates, optimizing bandwidth profiles, and securing recorded video metadata against tampering claims.

Firmware Upgrades

To access new GUI features, performance fixes, and security patches, regularly check for updates by navigating to Settings > Maintenance > Cloud Update and clicking Check for Update.

Encoding Optimization (Mainstream vs. Substream)

If mobile remote video streams freeze or load slowly over cellular data, review your stream encoding profile in Settings > Media > Video:

  • Mainstream: Configured for high resolution and high frame rates (e.g., 4K / 4MP @ 25fps) to save maximum detail to the local hard drive.
  • Substream: Configured for lower resolution (e.g., Standard Definition D1/VGA @ lower bitrates). Selecting the substream view on mobile apps ensures fluid live streams over poor cellular networks without impacting local high-res recording.

Encrypted Video Watermarking (Anti-Tamper & AI Protection)

To protect video evidence against claims of file manipulation or AI video generation, Uniview supports hidden cryptographic watermarking embedded directly into recording frames:

  1. Navigate to Setup > System > Security > Watermark.
  2. Toggle Watermark to the ON position for your cameras.
  3. Input a custom, unique Watermark Character Password. This cryptographic signature is embedded invisibly into video stream metadata.
  4. To verify file authenticity during legal proceedings, run exported video files through Uniview's standalone EZPlayer utility. EZPlayer parses the hidden metadata key to confirm whether the clip is 100% authentic or altered.

Administrative security dictates that primary master login credentials should never be shared among multiple users, employees, or family members. Instead, delegate access using UniEase account permissions.

Managing Device Access via Mobile App

  1. Open the UniEase application on your primary device.
  2. Locate your registered NVR system in the device list.
  3. Tap the Three Dots (...) options menu icon adjacent to the NVR title and select Share.
  4. UniEase Device Options Menu Tap the three dots next to the device name to open the sharing settings.
  5. Enter the recipient's registered UniEase username or account email address.
  6. Select permission tiers: define whether the recipient receives full administrative rights, live-view-only access, playback permissions, or specific channel access.
  7. Send the request. The shared system will instantly appear inside the recipient's UniEase app list without revealing your primary master password.

By following these steps, your Uniview NVR system is initialized, secured, networked, fine-tuned for smart analytics, and prepared for long-term operational stability.
